PhD APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Suggested Readings for Applicants
1. There is no disciplinary restriction concerning the undergraduate study of the applicants. The graduate program of the Ataturk Institute is open to graduates of any undergraduate program, who are willing to carry out a graduate study within the areas covered at the Institute.
2. Ataturk Institute does not accept PhD applications other than stated application periods.
3. Students who are going to apply to the PhD Program at the Atatürk Institute are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.00 over 4 (3.00 / 4.00) in their Master's Degree.
4 . Applicants are also required to hand in their score of GRE. Only Quantitative Section will be taken into consideration for the GRE exam. A minimum score of 155 is mandatory. For the Analytical Writing measure, a minimum score of 3,5 is mandatory.
5. Language of instruction at Bogazici University is English. Candidates wishing to start their program directly must prove their proficiency in English through an exam accepted by the University Senate before submitting their applications. The applicants are required to take one of the exams listed below and get an adequate score:

TWE is an acronym for Test of Written English, a test given by YADYOK. For more information please refer to http://www.yadyok.boun.edu.tr/
6. International applicants are required to hand in their scores of ÜDS (min. 55), taken in the fields of English or French or German (scores of exams taken in native languages will not be accepted). Any other equivalent language exam, accepted by the University Senate, is also valid.
7. The application procedure starts when the applicant submits his/her electronic application between the stated application period. The electronic application system is reached via the university's Graduate Programs Application page.
Applicants are required to provide the following documents during the electronic application:
· Completed application form with photograph attached;
· A certified photocopy of the candidate’s diploma or a letter certifying graduation;
· Official transcript, sent directly to Bogazici University Office of the Registrar from the University/Institute of Higher Education showing all courses taken and grades received;
· Two reference letters from persons familiar with the applicant's academic performance;
· GRE score report;
· Proof of English proficiency (certified by YADYOK);
· Bank receipt showing payment of the application fee.
- Applicants are advised to bring a copy of their published work (if any) such as articles, books etc. to the Institute before the written exam.
- Statement of Purpose (In English and not to exceed two pages)
8. After the applications are evaluated by the Institute, applicants who pass the evaluation will be called in for an interview. This interview/oral exam is conducted to test the applicants' empirical and analytical knowledge on the history of modern Turkey since the late Ottoman period. The reading list recommended for the exam can be found at the end of this page.
9. The applicants who are accepted to the graduate program will be announced by the Institute. They should, in person, carry out their registration in September, on the dates announced by the Registrar's Office.
