Abstract

This study can be read as an attempt to make a comparative analysis of the experiences of 1968 Student Movement in the West and in Turkey.

The main purpose of the thesis is to reveal the historical significance of 1968 as a worldwide phenomenon. In this context, it is vital to understand the role of the youth, which came to be a separate “intermediate social category” in that period. As a departure point, it is important to analyze the basic characteristics of the movement and the social mobilizers of the 1968 in order to understand the process. In order to underline the differences between the experiences, the political and social conjuncture in those states where the 1968 Movement had occurred is sketched. Finally, the analysis focuses on Turkey, with emphasis on the social and political aspects of “Turkish 68.” By setting the dimensions and comparisons, the whole process and the Turkish experiments of 1968 are analyzed in the light of their fate.

The aim of the thesis is to answer the following question: What were the major differences between the Turkish and the Western 1968? It is claimed that, the European 1968 was not aimed simply at overthrowing the old rulers and replacing them, but creating new kinds of social realities and human existences. In contrast to Europe, the 1968 Movement in Turkey was pointed towards the state rather than the society. And the activists represented mostly nationalist, middle-class, city-oriented developmental demands.

Özet

Bu çalisma dünyada ve Türkiye’de 1968 Ögrenci Hareketi’nin karsilastirmali analizi için bir girisim olarak okunabilir. Öncelikli amaç, 1968’in dünya genelinde tarihsel bir fenomen olarak önemini ortaya koymaktir. Bu baglamda, o dönemde ayri bir ara sosyal kategori haline gelen gençligin rolünü anlamak hayati bir önem tasimaktadir.

Kalkis noktasi olarak, süreci anlamak için hareketin temel niteliklerini analiz etmek önemlidir. Deneyimlerin farkliliklarinin altini çizmek için, 1968’in degisik biçimlerinin haritasi çikarilmistir. Tüm bunlardan sonra odak Türkiye’ye çevrilmis ve hareketin sosyal, politik yönleri vurgulanmistir. Karsilastirmalar ve farkli boyutlarin ortaya konmasiyla 1968’in Türkiye’deki deneyimi/seyri, kendi yazgisi isiginda analiz edilmistir.

Tezin en temel amaci su soruyu cevaplamaktir: Türkiye’de 1968 ile Bati’daki 1968 arasindaki büyük farkliliklar nelerdir?

Tezin iddiasina göre, Avrupa’daki 1968 Ögrenci Hareketi basitçe eski yöneticileri yikip yerine yenilerini koymayi degil, yeni sosyal gerçeklikler ve yeni bir insan modeli yaratmayi hedeflemistir. Avrupa’nin aksine Türkiye’de 1968 hareketi ise yüzünü topluma degil devlete dönmüstür. Ve genel olarak milliyetçi, orta sinif, kent merkezli kalkinmaci talepleri temsil etmistir.
