The Evaluations of Sefik Hüsnü on the "National Question" and on the Revolution in Turkey Between 1919-1925

This thesis examines the evaluations of Sefik Hüsnü Degmer, who was the general secretary of the Communist Party of Turkey for many years, on the social, economic and political structure of Turkey, the national liberation struggle and the foundation of the Republic in the period between 1919-1925. The topics that Sefik Hüsnü dealt with within this period were the class structure of Turkey, the possibility of a socialist revolution in the actual conditions of the country and the attitude that the communists should take towards the national liberation struggle in Anatolia and its leadership. The answers that Sefik Hüsnü formulated were closely related not only to the objective conditions of the country, but also to the debates taking place in the international communist movement and to the existence of the newly founded socialist republic in Russia.

This thesis analyzes the thoughts of Sefik Hüsnü within the framework composed of the elements mentioned below; at presenting the evolution in the thinking process and organizational position of Sefik Hüsnü and at revealing how his evaluations of the national movement varied parallel to the great changes in Tukey
in the aftermath of World War One and parallel to the alterations in the policies of the Communist International.

1919-1925 Yillari Arasinda Sefik Hüsnü’nün Türkiye’de Devrim ve “Ulusal Kurtulus” Hakkindaki Görüsleri

Bu tez uzun yillar Türkiye Komünist Partisi genel sekreterligi yapmis Sefik Hüsnü Degmer’in, 1919-1925 yillari arasinda, Türkiye’nin sosyal, iktisadi ve siyasal yapisi ve ulusal kurtulus mücadelesi ile cumhuriyetin kurulusu hakkindaki düsüncelerini incelemektedir. Sefik Hüsnü’nün bu yillarda ilgilendigi ve tez kapsaminda incelenen basliklar, Türkiye’nin sinifsal yapisi, sosyalist bir devrimin mevcut kosullarda mümkün olup olmadigi ve komünistlerin Anadolu’daki ulusal kurtulus mucadelesine ve bu mücadeleye liderlik eden ulusalci kadrolara karsi nasil bir tavir almasi gerektigidir. Sefik Hüsnü’nün bu sorulara verdigi cevaplar sadece Türkiye nesnelligi ile degil ayni zamanda uluslararasi komünist hareket içerisindeki tartismalar ve Rusya’da yeni kurulmus olan sosyalist cumhuriyet ile de yakindan baglantililidir. Tez, Sefik Hünü’nün bu konulardaki görüslerini tüm bu baglantilariyla birlikte incelemeye çalisirken ayni zamanda dönem içerisinde, Sefik Hüsnü’nün, kendi düsünsel ve örgütsel gelisimini; Türkiye’nin Birinci Dünya savasinin ardindan geçirdigi büyük dönüsümler ve Komünist Enternasyonalin savundugu politikalardaki degisime paralel olarak Türkiye’deki ulusal harekete dair düsüncelerinin süreç boyunca nasil bir degisim izledigini de ortaya koymaya çalismaktadir.
