A Literary Survey of Early Arab Nationalism: Old and New Narratives

This thesis explores the historical literature that has accumulated concerning the early period, generally defined as the late Ottoman and early World War One period. The primary aim of this thesis is to examine how this subject has been treated by scholars throughout the twentieth century by examining both the literature written concerning the rise of Arab nationalism itself and literature concerning historical events and social, economic, and political changes of this era.

Scholars have examined the early stages of Arab nationalism from a number of viewpoints. This survey attempts to trace the way in which these viewpoints have been presented, revised, and reinterpreted in light of advances made in the fields of social science and history, and with the availability of new evidence.

This study shows that as historiographical methodology has developed, new emphases and foci have become important to new generations of scholars. While scholars of the period examine more or less the same basic issues, their methods of examination and their emphases within these subjects have shifted over the years, dividing them into three main categories.
Each generation of scholars has made crucial contributions to the field of Arab nationalist historiography while significantly influencing its predecessor. Through the combination of standing theories and new ideas, that have developed through a continuing trend of revision and reexamination of the events of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a comprehensive view of early Arab nationalist ideology has developed.
 
Erken Dönem Arap Milliyetçiligi Üzerine Bir Literatür Çalismasi: Eski ve Yeni Anlatilar

Bu çalisma, Arap milliyetçiliginin erken dönemine iliskin yazilmis tarihî literatürü ele almaktadir. Bu erken dönem genellikle Osmanli Imparatorlugu'nun son dönemleri ve Birinci Dünya Savasi'nin baslangiç dönemi olarak degerlendirilmektedir. Bu tezin temel amaci milliyetçi bir Arap bilincinin ve buna yol açan tarihî olaylari, toplumsal, ekonomik ve siyasî degisiklikleri yirminci yüzyilda çesitli akademisyenlerce nasil ele alindigini incelemektir.

Bu akademisyenler Arap milliyetçiliginin ilk dönemlerini birçok degisik bakis açisiyla degerlendirmistir. Bu tezde sözkonusu bakis açilarinin sosyal bilimler ve tarih alaninda ortaya çikan gelismeler ve yeni kanitlar isiginda nasil sunulduklarini, degistirildiklerini ve yeniden yorumlandiklarini ortaya koymak amaçlanmistir.

Bu çalisma, tarihsel metodoloji gelistikçe yeni kusak akademisyenler için yeni vurgu ve odak noktalarinin önem kazandigini göstermektedir. Dönemi inceleyen akademisyenler hemen hemen ayni temel noktalari inceleseler de, inceleme yöntemleri ve bu konularda vurguladiklari noktalar yillar boyunca degisiklik göstermistir ve akademisyenlerin üç ana kategoride toplanabilecegini göstermektedir.

Her bir akademisyen kusaginin alana önemli katkilarda bulundugunu ve bir sonraki kusagi etkilendigini unutmamamiz gerekmektedir. Eski teoriler ve on dokuzuncu yüzyil sonunda, yirminci yüzyil basinda meydana gelen olaylarin bir gözden geçirilmesi sonucu ortaya çikan yeni fikirlerin birlesmeleri erken dönem Arap milliyetçiligi ideolojisine iliskin kapsayici bakis açisina yol açmistir.
